Counselling Proverb -

'The client can only go as far as the counsellor can go themselves,'

I know..

What it is like sitting opposite a client and wondering if I am skilled enough to help them.

That's why I built this training as a step by step guide for qualified counsellors to work ethically and safely with client trauma.

This course will equip you to identify trauma and work competently, safely and ethically with your client using up to date knowledge and techniques. Crucially it will keep you emotionally safe and equip you with the knowledge and skills to make an informed decision should you need to refer the client.

Who am I?

My name is Rory Lees-Oakes I am a qualified counsellor, lecturer in counselling, and clinical supervisor with nearly two decades of experience. My practice includes seven years of working as a school counsellor and private practice, where trauma was a recurring theme.

My experience

In 2015 I appeared on BBC TV's Britain's Classroom Heroes, where I was awarded the Pearson Silver Plato award for outstanding use of technology in education.

This means I understand how to teach online, meaning you get tried and tested blended learning techniques that lead to positive learning outcomes.
I am also a fellow of the Teaching Awards, and I undertake regular CPD meaning the knowledge I share in this course is current and applicable in today's practice.

How can I help?

I taught counselling at practice level for over ten years, and I know training courses do not address trauma, its causes or ways to work with it, yet trauma is presenting more and more in the therapy room.

My training course fills the gap in your knowledge and allows you to work ethically, compassionately, and safely with trauma in your client's service.

What you will learn

Trauma-informed practice employs psychological education to help clients become resilient and self-compassionate. Additionally, it allows practitioners to avoid pathologizing trauma, instead emphasising gentle and sustained recovery.

How to work sensitively with trauma

Working with traumatised clients requires sensitivity and an awareness of the processes that inform traumatisation.
In this course, you will learn how to work with trauma without re-traumatising your client.

How to work in a trauma informed way

Being trauma-informed means that you will have the tools and knowledge to work safely with a range of presenting issues.
This course will teach you how to apply your new learning and knowledge in your therapy practice.

How to avoid vicarious trauma

Therapists who engage in empathetic conversations with survivors of traumatic incidents, abuse, and trauma-related materials can experience trauma.
During this course, you will learn how to avoid being traumatized by your client's material while still being an effective therapist.

How trauma affects the brain

Trauma causes the brain to shut down all nonessential systems and activate the sympathetic nervous system and mammalian brain. During this course you will learn now to
teach your client what is going on for them and how they can handle any dissociation they may experience.

"Having attended a number of lectures, training and live events with Rory, he has a unique knack of demystifying sometimes quite complex theories and interventions, and then reframing them in a way that helps my adhd brain process and internalise it. In the past I have found training and learning a real challenge, so it particularly benefits me and ensures that I am able to retain that learning and build my confidence and knowledge in the subject."
